AlcoHOLidays | Banana Cream Pie Day | Banana Cream-Tini

You gotta love it when the holidays lend themselves so easily to a cocktail, right? March 2 is Banana Cream Pie Day and I’m having trouble coming up with any objections to such a day existing. Banana pies and banana cream custards go back to the late-1800s, but the first written record specifically for the banana cream pie is found in 1906, courtesy of The Blue Ribbon Cook Book. Every pie maven surely has their own version of the pie these days, a favorite for pot lucks and spring holidays, and there are plenty of cocktail versions around, too. Of course, I

AlcoHOLidays | Valentine’s Day | Loving Cup

Ah, yes, Valentine’s Day… Thought by many to be a wonderful day of expressing our love for others in various public and private ways. Thought by others to be a trumped-up excuse by the candy and card manufacturers to bilk out a little more money between the Christmas holidays and Easter. I’ll never forget the time my economics professor held up the start of class because he had to go on a tirade about how silly it was that the depth of his love for his girlfriend was decided by what he did or did not do on a single day of

Cosmic Cocktails | Pisces | Sleeps With the Fishes

And here we are, at the end of our jaunt among the cosmos, with our final sign in the zodiac: Pisces. I’ve dated to astrological fish in my time and, with a little reflection, I see that they are each on totally opposite ends of the Piscean spectrum. The high school Pisces definitely had that little-white-lie habit down, along with the straying eye. The creative version of the truth may have made things nice and rosy for a while, but a tissue of lies is pretty flimsy, and eventually fell apart. But boy did he have charm. The fiance Pisces,

Dreaming of Summer

Or, well, at least the foods of summer. Especially watermelon. It was all I could think of when I saw that this week’s Alphatini was to be w-inspired and, despite the unseasonableness of the craving it just would not be stopped! Now, true, our summers aren’t exactly the most pleasant and, despite my cold-natured body I do prefer being able to start a fire or put on a sweater rather than sweltering (or running up the utility bill with constant a/c runnage). So I’ll happily settle for this light and fruity cocktail version of summer in a glass. Watermelon Crawl

Dreaming of a Tropical New Year

Because you can always dream, right? This week’s alphatini called for something fit to a tee–and I began thinking Tangerine. Namely, the tangerine liqueur we picked up in Roatan on our last cruise (which has been far too far in the past). A Dreamsicle martini would be the easy route, but since I was thinking tropical, I figured the tangerine could use a few friends to make nice with in the glass. Tangerine Dream 1.5 oz Heavy Cream 1 oz Vanilla Vodka 1 oz Tangerine Liqueur 1/2 oz Pineapple Rum 1/4 oz Banana Liqueur garnish: citrus peel Combine all ingredients

Slip Into Something More Raspberry

What, no one decided to take up the Quest cocktail challenge? That’s too bad! Maybe this week’s cocktail will be better suited for you, then, and we’ll keep it short and sweet, to boot! It’s the holidays, after all, and everyone seems to be in a hurry. Chefs love to tell stories–I don’t know, must come with the job–and our chefs at school were no exception. One (who also happened to be an English major before he became a chef) loved to tell us all the odd things they’d come up with to round out the usual cocktail and buffet offerings.

You Spin Me Right, Round & Upside Down

The same restaurant that served Todd that fabulous Lemon Drop Martini had another item on the menu that I wished I’d ordered instead of the all-alcohol pomegranate martini I nursed for the night. But we didn’t order it, so I have no idea what it tastes like, but it sounded so good I jotted down the description with a plan to try it out back home. Of course, that was three years ago and I’ve yet to experiment with this cocktail: until now. First, it had vanilla vodka–something we’d only recently encountered at the time and our favorite form of the otherwise

That’s How the Cookie Crumbles

Or, rather, shakes. Okay, the O-cocktail in this series is another one I’ve been looking forward to getting just right. We first had it ages ago at a tapas-style restaurant. We’d gone there after a late movie and ate (and drank) at the bar. While we weren’t really looking for another full cocktail (we’d each had one a piece–moderation, remember?) the martini list was so tempting, so we asked for this one as a shot. Oh, it was divine, and we’ve worked on the right combination off and on since then. I think we’ve finally got it right. Oatmeal Cookie

A Little Taste of the Crescent City

It’s been a busy week here at Money Creek: 2 cocktails and 3 bottles of wine busy! But it was while creating one of my Character Cocktails for an upcoming product launch (they’re not just for people, you know) that I was struck with inspiration for this week’s Alphatini cocktial, the letter N. And a good thing I did because I was drawing a pretty big blank, facing the second half of our alphabetical series. But inspiration was found and now I can’t see how I would have missed it. For this one we’re going to take a little field trip to

Miss Mangotini, I Presume

You know that old friend, the one you were so close to back in the day but then there was that falling out and while you might be civil to one another you certainly don’t go seeking out her company? We all have one whether you call her your ex-bestie or your flat-out-frenemy, those skeletons exist somewhere in your closet. That’s me and this next drink. Oh, we were a fabulous combo when I first encountered her on a work trip ‘lo those many years ago. I went to the ends of the earth (or at least the Internet) to
