Healthy Eating

Nutrition Nugget: To Meat or Not To Meat I spoke at a Wellness gathering this past Friday evening. For the second time this year my presentation was interrupted by a person calling out, “Is this about being vegan?” My reply, “No, it is not.” Just as I was about to resume the discussion, the second question hit, “Is this about being a vegetarian?” Again my reply, “No, it is not.” Then the final question hit, “Well, are you?” My answer, “No I am not. Does that make a difference?” I suppose it did because the restless native settled down and

Diet: Abstinence Eating Plan-No second helpings, no clean plate club

Image via Wikipedia For April (I did start April 1, I just didn’t write about it), I decided to not omit a food group but instead to not have second helpings and to not clean my plate or to leave some food on my plate. Recap: In January, I gave up cheese and lost 4 pounds. Cheese did creep back into my diet. I’m not cheesing overboard but still cheesing. A little cheese is calcium but too much cheese is salt and fat. In February, I gave up sugar. I didn’t lose any weight which was mind boggling to me.

Abstinence Eating Plan – No Sugar

Image by dhammza via Flickr February 2010 – Abstinence Eating Plan – Go AEP! In January, I gave up cheese.  Prior to January I would eat a lot of cheese – cheese in my scrambled eggs, cheese on my salad, cheese with an apple, cheese with nuts and wine. Cheese, cheese, say cheese. In the end I lost 4 pounds. I thought I lost 5 pounds but I gained one pound back.  Still by not doing anything except giving up cheese — I lost 4 pounds. I’ll drink to that! I probably gained a pound back because nearing the end

Diet: Abstinence Eating Plan – Cheese-less

Image via Wikipedia People have been asking me about not eating cheese. The good news, I’ve lost 5 pounds!  The bad news, no bad news. I barely miss cheese. It’s amazing to me that I lost 5 pounds just by giving up cheese. All things being equal — I’m still an exercise slug — but I have not eaten cheese. The other night I cooked an amazing pasta sauce and thought — wow, this would really taste good with a sprinkling of freshly grated Parmesan, but of course, didn’t have any. Then I made a beautiful salad of greens +

Diet: Abstinence Eating Plan

Image via Wikipedia In 2010 I plan to try something new. Every year I say I going to exercise more. I don’t. I say I’m going to do this and I’m going to do that. I don’t. This year I’m taking a new approach.  Every month I’m going to give up something. I’m going to forfeit or omit. I’m not going to give up salad or exercise. I’m going to give up or abstain from a food that I like. It’s makes more sense to me to do without than to try to do more. Giving up is so uncomplicated.

Cookie Diet – Woman Loses 120 Pounds

Okay, I’ll bite. Normally, I wouldn’t post this but I’ve read about the Cookie Diet ™ before and now it’s on the cover of People magazine.  Kudos to Ms. Raper who is a fellow Arizonan who lost 120 pounds. What a transformation! 34 years ago, a Miami doctor created these cookies for his patients. Dr. Siegal’s cookies — which he still claims to mix every batch himself along with his wife’s help — supress hunger yet are filled with a secret protein rich formula (that tastes good too).  He sounds like the good cookie monster. Check out the Cookie Diet . It’s probably more palatable than

South Beach Diet – Low Glycemic – Day 3

Today wraps up my 3rd day of low glycemic eating. I chose the South Beach Diet over say Weight Watchers or Jenny Craig is because on the South Beach Diet, you lose stomach fat first. I don’t know how and I don’t know why but I much prefer to lose stomach fat first rather than for someone to say, “I can see it in your face that you lost weight.” Here’s what I ate today. Again, I wasn’t that hungry. Election 08 and the Wall Street fall out caused me to lose my appetite.  Breakfast: turkey burger Mid morning: 2 egg
