Like every day, there’s a national something or other day. June 1 happens to be National Donut Day.

Participating Dunkin’ Donuts are giving away a free donut with the purchase of a beverage.

The offer is good “while supplies last” and your participation may vary.

According to Wikipedia, National Doughnut Day is on the first Friday of June each year, succeeding the Doughnut Day event created by The Salvation Army in 1938 to honor the women who served doughnuts to soldiers during World War I. The holiday celebrates the doughnut (a.k.a. “donut”) — an edible, torus-shaped piece of dough which is deep-fried and sweetened. Many American doughnut stores offer free doughnuts on National Doughnut Day. In 2009, both independent doughnut shops and large national franchises offered free doughnuts in the United States.

Speaking of donuts, I vacationed in southwest Florida last week and went to a marvelous coffee and donut shop called Bennett’s Fresh Roast. Every city should have at least one Bennett’s. Not only do they roast their own delicious brew but they also hand cut and make from scratch worthy to dream about donuts. The guy who waited on us was mystified that we only chose one donut between the two of us. Yet, it was a memorable, light as a feather cinnamon-sugar number that I am still thinking about a week later.

Bennett’s also makes a donut with maple frosting and real pieces of bacon on top.  Oddly enough, I just wanted to stick to the basics but the maple-bacon is their signature donut.

No matter, where you live, I hope you have a happy donut day.

What is your favorite donut?
