Cloning: Madder Cow Disease

I just read an article where the FDA said that milk and meat from some cloned farm animals is considered safe.

Yeah, like the FDA is an authority on what’s safe. Don’t forget the FDA said that Vioxx was safe as well as hormone replacement therapy (HRT). When women stopped taking HRT, the amount of breast cancer plunged.

I wonder if the cloning lobbyists finally paved their way with payola into the FDA’s door step.

Most consumers are against cloning to begin with much less eating and drinking their products. Cloning is just too science fiction. I don’t mind watching a science fiction movie; I just don’t want to live it. The adage you are what you eat really gets scary. Clone animals today and clone people tomorrow. Let’s not clone any more Paris Hiltons.

Cloning opponents hope to derail the policy before it becomes final or require that food is labeled “cloned” or “clone-free” much like “sugar-free” so consumers can make choices. The cincher is that the FDA officials say that it’s unlikely labeling would be required because food from cloned animals is indistinguishable from other food although to some of us — ethically and emotionally different.  

At this point in time, who can predict what drinking cloned milk does to a body after a dozen years? Got cloned milk?

It’s time to get active and write your elected officials about 1) derailing the policy and 2) required cloning labeling.

So far no other countries have approved food from cloned livestock. Let’s just say they’re smarter than the U.S. and don’t have the FDA dictating policy. Possibly, American exports of milk and meat from cloned animals could be blocked and rightly so. 

Eating meat is already scary enough what with the threat of Mad Cow Disease and e.Coli bacteria.

Cloned meat just might make us lose our manic meat-eating appetites once and for all and embrace vegetarianism.

  1. I don’t care whether my meat is cloned or not. The DNA is just an identical copy — no different than identical twins or double-yoked eggs.

    I also don’t care whether the the majority of the public is against it. Many people are against change until they see an advantage to change — whether it be a health advantage, a price advantage, or a beauty advantage.

    Perhaps it is because the meat will be priced the same, taste the same, and actually “be” the same, people are not expending any energy to support it. There is nothing in it for them to do so.
