Dumbing Down Chocolates:Tell FDA Don’t Mess with Our Chocolate

What’s this world coming to when the Chocolate Marketing Association wants to change the formula of chocolate?

If the Chocolate Marketing Association gets their way, chocolate will be more diluted in quality with a waxy texture and greasier taste; yuck, sounds gross. The plan is to eliminate all of the cocoa butter and replace with a mystery vegetable oil product. Another part of the plan is to eliminate whole milk powder and replace with a stripped down version called milk protein concentrate, also known as whey.

Not anything can be called chocolate. The making and designating of chocolate must follow FDA standards and we want to keep it that way. But an army of lobbyists want to change all that. These food standards prescribe minimum amounts of certain ingredients. Food standards are used to ensure that products sold under particular names have the characteristics expected by consumers.

Cocoa butter costs $2.30 per pound while mystery vegetable oil costs 70 cents per pound. Hershey, Mars, Nestles, and others want to make a more inferior chocolate in taste and texture and cut their price as well.  Although it’s highly unlikely that consumers will be paying less for this inferior version of chocolate.

In our society where people are reading labels and paying more attention to ingredients, the Chocolate Marketing Association wants to insult our intelligence and dumb down chocolate.

It’s important to note that not all chocolate manufacturers in the United States want this change. They still want the privilege of calling their chocolate – chocolate — while retaining the higher standards of chocolate. Guittard is one of them. As a matter of fact Guittard is waging this war on the new proposed lesser chocolate standards.

If we let the greedy mega chocolate corporations have their way, we can kiss goodbye the chocolate goodness of a Hershey’s kiss and the exquisite melt-in-your-mouth richness of a Dove Bar (now owned by Mars).

If this happens we might have a chocolate recall because who knows where the mystery vegetable oil products will come from and what they will be made from?

Tell the FDA don’t mess with your chocolate. You can sign a petition letting the FDA know how you feel. Tell all your fellow chocoholics to sign the petition too. Help spread the word. Comments must be entered by the extended date of June 25, 2007.

    I submitted my comments. I LOVE and relish my high cocoa content dark and bittersweet chocolate. It is a luxurious indulgence and I do not want it diluted.

    If the high commercial candy producers want to change the recipe, let them call it by another name, such as fake-olate.

    quality recipes……..
    “synthetic” chocolate should be given a synthetic name
