Tucson: Tyler Fenton, Reilly Craft Pizza, Owner and Restaurateur

You would never know that Reilly was a former funeral home and Circle of Food promises no dying to eat here jokes. In 2012, Reilly opened its doors and since has become a trifecta of sorts with an inspired restaurant for the hungry, a separate beer garden for the thirsty and the Tough Luck Club cocktail bar in the basement.

What’s your favorite dish to cook on a personal level and why?

My favorite dish to cook is Cacio e Pepe. It is my favorite pasta; it is so simple but so amazing. It exemplifies the importance of quality and technique… if either are lacking, the dish is a failure.

What’s the best or most memorable meal you have eaten lately? Where? Why?

Best/most memorable meal I have eaten lately would be at Emmer & Rye in Austin. The restaurant is run by Chef Kevin Fink (a 2016 Food & Wine Best New Chef) who is a friend from Tucson. The food we had was insane! They have a set menu as well as a “dim sum style” cart serving additional small plates, which was a fun touch. Everything we ate there was killer. They do a lot of fermentation, as well as freshly milled grains, so the flavors they are producing are unlike anything I’ve had recently.

What’s your favorite food city? Why?

I really enjoy Austin for the variety of different dining experiences. You can get in line at 7am to have a 12 pm lunch at Franklin BBQ (which is totally worth the wait!) or you can grab great breakfast tacos from a food truck, or have a 20+ course tasting menu at a restaurant like Qui. There are a lot of really great ethnic restaurants (the best ramen and the best Thai food I’ve had). And the number of restaurants doing really phenomenal food in a fun and comfortable environment is insane! I have not had a bad meal in that city!

A good meal is not complete without … ?

Good friends and booze! I like to start a meal with cocktails and then switch over to wine. Having good friends around helps when you want to eat the whole menu too!                                               l-reilly-pizza

My 3 favorite restaurants are:

  1. Vivace – Danny is a longtime friend and he consistently puts out solid food.
  2. Cafe Poca Cosa/Little Cafe Poca Cosa – I love the food at both restaurants and I love the completely different vibes. I have never had a bad meal at either!
  3. Pizzeria Bianco- I love pizza, and since I work with it every day It is nice to have a pizza that isn’t my own. The Rosa might be my favorite pizza ever.

Karyn Zoldan: Here’s a first: One restaurateur serving delicious pizza favors the competition. Reilly is a locally-owned restaurant gem in our thriving downtown food scene. Check it out.
