Going Back to E Street

Last weekend we were in Jacksonville for Ancient City Convention and one of the many things we were looking forward to was another visit (or 2) to European Street Cafe. But out first night, after driving the 2.5 hours to get to town, checking in out our hotel and unpacking, and then heading to the convention hotel to set up, E Street was closed by the time we headed that way again. In fact, at 10pm on a Thursday night, most places were already closed and we drove around for a while before finding the Hurricane Grill, whose sign announced a recent

A Hot Way to Cool Down

Ahh, rum. It was my spirit of choice back when I hit the legal drinking age (no, really, I was a goody two shoes and didn’t drink until I was 21*), probably because I grew up watching Aunt Marie mix Pina Coladas at my grandmother’s wet bar and I just thought that was the life, right there. (*Except for that Thanksgiving we were in Louisiana and the legal drinking age was still 18. And, when unsure of what to order, my companion said “Order an Amaretto Sour–it’s what I get when I’m driving.”) Rum and coke, fruity rum libations, rum balls,

National Coffee Milkshake Day – July 26

July 26 – National Coffee Milkshake Day OMG! Does everything have its day? This is totally ridiculous. The reason I know it’s National Coffee Milkshake Day is because KRUPS sent me a press release. First Impressions: Kiku Japanese Fusion

The other night I just flat-out did NOT feel like cooking. I’d been craving some “real” sushi for weeks and decided that would be the night we’d try out Kiku, a sushi place just up the road that was forever advertising a buy-one-get-one sushi roll special. Because of the advertisements I was expecting something along the lines of a Sumo Sabi (the fast-food of sushi, essentially) but I’d heard good things about their quality. However, when we walked in, we were met with dark wood, dim lighting, and an extensive menu of rolls, maki, and other delicacies. I was pleasantly surprised.

Product Review: Kahlua Iced Coffee to Go, Cocktails

Product Review: Kahlua Iced Coffee to Go I love Kahlua, an intensely rich coffee liqueur from Mexico. Pour a tablespoon or two over chocolate or coffee ice cream (okay vanilla for you purists) and you have a simple dessert for the 21+ crowd. I received some samples delivered by Fed-Ex, that’s one of the perks about blogging about food & cocktails. (wink) I’m going to be very bad here and think back several ago when I had a civil service job and was bored out of my gourd. Some of us did substance abuse on the premises. Or at break

ICC | Poush Parbon er Pati Shapta | Bengali Coconut Crepes

After many months absence, I finally had a chance to participate in this month’s Indian Cooking Challenge once again! Now, if you think back a couple of weeks you may remember those scrumptious Banana Crepes I posted about. The reason I was making crepes on a summer Sunday morning was this month’s ICC recipe and I seized the opportunity to not be stuck eating them all myself by making them when we were expecting guests. The banana filling came about because Todd’s not fond of coconut, but the original version was delicious, too. Poush Parbon er Pati Shapta courtesy of Sandeepa of Bong Mom’s Cookbook

Cosmic Cocktails | Pisces | Sleeps With the Fishes

And here we are, at the end of our jaunt among the cosmos, with our final sign in the zodiac: Pisces. I’ve dated to astrological fish in my time and, with a little reflection, I see that they are each on totally opposite ends of the Piscean spectrum. The high school Pisces definitely had that little-white-lie habit down, along with the straying eye. The creative version of the truth may have made things nice and rosy for a while, but a tissue of lies is pretty flimsy, and eventually fell apart. But boy did he have charm. The fiance Pisces,
