Tucson: Americana and 24/7 Eats

Written by Monica Surfaro, guest food blogger After a lifetime enjoying the good grub and happy experiences of NYC roadside diners, I was hankering for the same here in Tucson. Every town needs at least one awesome round-the-clock center of comfort food, trucker nostalgia and funky character. So this week I set my sights on the big TTT signage off the Interstate and was not disappointed. TTT is a local treasure. A welcoming staff…clean facilities….appetizing and hefty diner-food portions. There are cozy booths and a homey atmosphere made even more interesting by the pleasant southwest artwork that dots the décor.

Chicken Marbella and Sheila Lukins

One of the authors of the famous Silver Palate Cookbook — Sheila Lukins — has died from brain cancer. She also wrote a monthly column for Parade magazine. The Silver Palate Cookbook delivered many famous and still sought after and searched for recipes — one of the most popular is Chicken Marbella  made with olives and prunes in a brown sugar laced wine sauce.  If I get to choose my last supper on earth — Chicken Marbella it will be. Julee Rosso is the other author.

Nibbles & Bites: The Melting Pot

Though a fairly popular chain of restaurants now, the first Melting Pot opened in 1975 in Maitland, Florida, with the first franchise following in Tallahassee, four years later. If you haven’t tried out your local fondue hot-spot, maybe now would be a good time to give it a whirl? Reservations are highly recommended, but not required. We’ve done it both ways and the wait’s not usually too long but we’ve also opted to eat in

Sips & Shots: Orange You Glad It’s Cocktail Hour?

The first Thanksgiving with the extended New Orleans family after my 21st birthday was a bit surreal: my Uncle was mixing Mimosas but the carton (pour out a third of the juice, fill with Champagne, shake and pour) and offered me one. I think it took my mother by as much surprise as it did me! Orange juice is one of the most common mixers in cocktails though I’ve never been fond of it’s most common pair-up, Vodka, in the Screwdriver. Of course, that has a lot to do with early vodka experiences and low-quality product. Taken a step further,

Went to Maynards Market for lunch. Ate a delicious Cuban pork sandwich (half for dinner) and a Bibb lettuce salad with figs and pistachios. # Hungry by mid-morning or mid-day? Try adding some protein into your breakfast – one egg white or a piece of Canadian bacon or turkey breast # Mary: I have to admit that I go to McDonald's quite frequently – albeit it for coffee. #

ME: New Beverage Sensation, Coming Soon

It’s all about ME. The ME people sent me four 4-packs of Find Your ME beverages. Since it’s not all about me, I decided to share with several people so I could get a variety of opinions. But first a little about ME beverages: ME is packaged in bright colored sleek 10.5 oz containers and packages so it’s guaranteed to catch the eye. The target audience is probably Gen-X and younger and most definitely females. ME’s SRP is $3.99 and will be available in grocery stores nationwide in September. Although not a diet drink, ME is not nearly as sweet
