Tucson Festival of Books for foodies, postscript

Okay, so the 3rd Annual Tucson Festival of Books last weekend wasn’t exactly a food festival but at the Culinary Tent and elsewhere on the University of Arizona campus there was plenty of foodie fun.

Food demonstrations by Daisy Martinez, Janos Wilder, Shirley Fong-Torres and others were only a part pf the scene.

Circle of Food writer and foodie friend Karyn Zoldan was part of a panel called “Food Writing 101.” She along with Edie Jarolim, a Tucson based food writer, Pamela Hamilton, editor of “Edible Phoenix” and Barry Infuso, a food writer and Dean of Cuisine at Pima Community College, discussed the business of writing all about food. Questions from the audience kept them on their toes.

I was part of the “The Power of the Restaurant Review” with Jarolim, Wilder and Barbara Fairchild, former editor of “Bon Appetit” magazine. We walked a lot about how the internet has affected the review process. This was made all the more interesting because Corey Dane of Yelp Tucson was the moderator. I had fun, made new friends and learned all kinds of interesting things to help my writing.

I also volunteered at the tent and heard Steve Raichlen, the king of BBQ. Being behind the scenes on that demo allowed me to eat some of the best steak and shrimp I’ve had in a long time. Shirley Fong-Torres was a blast. She was funny and informative. Her book, “The Woman Who Ate Chinatown, A San Francisco Odyssey” covers her life and all the best places to visit in her hometown. She owns, Wok Wiz, a company that gives culinary tours of SF’s Chinatown. And from Steve Fried I learned everything I ever wanted to know about the Harvey girls.
