Another new restaurant is  added to the menu of restaurants in downtown Tucson. While Campbell Avenue might be conceived as a fairly stable restaurant row, downtown Tucson is exploding with a 30-something generation of restaurateurs. Coming in November…Brian Metzger names his restaurants after his children — Jax Kitchen, The Abbey, and soon-to-be,  Gio Taco.

(TUCSON, Ariz.) — In a commitment to bring fast, fun and culturally inspired cuisine to the world of tacos, Metzger Family Restaurants has announced plans to open Gio Taco later this year. Named for restaurateur Brian Metzger’s stepson Giovanni, the 2,400 square-foot, fast-casual restaurant will be located at 350 E. Congress Street on downtown Tucson’s East End, in the new Cadence development on the corner of E. Congress Street and S. Toole Avenue.

Influenced by national and international cuisine, Gio Taco’s menu will pay homage to those cultures known for vibrant culinary and community traditions, many of which Metzger has personally experienced on recent travels. “Whether their foundations are from the streets of Havana, the gardens of Costa Rica, the beaches of Hawaii, or the coast of Puerto Rico, our tacos will be intentionally designed to ignite a sense of adventure among our guests,” said Metzger.

“While we’re surely not asking our guests to forget everything they know about tacos, we’ll be introducing them to a new attitude and concept of what tacos can really be,” Metzger said. “Our culinary team will basically be creating a ‘no-rules’ kitchen, and everything we do will be guided by our pledge to provide a ‘totally unexpected’ experience.”

Metzger’s long time colleagues Sonia Sotinsky and Miguel Fuentevilla of FORS Architecture + Interiors will design the space, and general contractor Jamie Olding of Building Excellence will oversee the construction.

“We’re most excited to have one of the best and brightest restaurateurs from Tucson moving into downtown,” said Jim Campbell of OT Alegria, the developer of the property. “Just like Jax Kitchen and The Abbey defined what a Metzger restaurant encompasses,” he continued, “Gio Taco will show Brian’s playful side.  I am excited about it all.”

Slated to open in November, Gio Taco will be the company’s third eatery in Tucson, joining the popular Jax Kitchen on N. Oracle Road, named for Metzger’s son Jack, and The Abbey on E. Sunrise Drive, named for Metzger’s daughter, Abby.
