Tucson Eats: Reforma and Jackson Tavern Open

Jackson Tavern Tucson

Tucson’s newest restaurant

Wow! Two upscale restaurants open their doors two days in a row.

Reforma, cocina and cantina serving authentic food from Central Mexico, opens on Sunday December 14 at St. Philips Plaza in the former Vivace space. Reforma boasts Tucson’s largest selection of tequila and mescal selections + homemade tortillas. Reforma has the same owners as Union Public House so they are competing with themselves not unlike Fox Restaurant Concepts which competes with itself at La Encantada: North Italia vs. Blanco’s. Other restaurants at St. Philips Plaza are Scordato Pizzeria and Bodega.

Jackson Tavern at Plaza Palomino opens Monday December 15 in the former Red Sky space. JT belongs to the Metzger Family Restaurant Group which also boasts Gio Taco (celebrating its first anniversary next week) and Poppy Kitchen.

Circle of Food previously wrote about Jackson Tavern.

Other restaurants at Plaza Palomino include Vero Amore, Café Francais, and Placita Café.

Cashew Cow opens Dec. 15 at Broadway Village right next to Sugar Sweet Bakery so you can get your sweet tooth fix a number of ways. The Cow is non-dairy, cashew-based alternative to ice cream so people who are allergic to nuts will have to get their cold creamy fix elsewhere.

For cold creamy fixes, Circle of Food suggests Allegro Gelato on 6th Street/Campbell or the Screamery at Broadway/Houghton. The latter’s ice cream is made from cows that have been grass fed. Its flavors pop, pop, pop. It’s a bit of a schlep for us but I find the Screamery calling my name.

North Italia’s Holiday Dinner (part of the Fall Community Dinners series) is again created by Executive Chef Carlos Calderon and will be held on Wednesday, December 17.

The dinner will feature four courses of traditional holiday dishes from different regions in Italy plus appropriate wine pairings for $55 per person plus tax and gratuity. Please RSVP in person or call 299.1600. The December 17 dinner begins at 6:30 pm

it’s all good at North Italia

The four courses are antipasto, hand-cut saffron pasta with seafood, roasted veal with accompaniments, donuts with chestnut butter and quince jam

And this being the holiday season, almost every restaurant worth its Himalayan sea salt flavored sea bass puree has gift cards. Buy $100 dollars worth and get $10, $15, or $20 free at Acacia, Tavolino, Downtown Kitchen and Cocktails, RA Sushi and more.

Speaking of RA Sushi, for those of us who don’t celebrate Christmas, RA will be open on December 25 from 4 PM to 11 PM serving its new winter menu and happy hour from 4 to 7 PM at La Encantada. That makes me happy.
