from the press release

Organizers of the wildly popular Arizona Taco Festival in Scottsdale take the party south to Tucson for a taco throw-down of epic proportions.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz.—On April 28, 2012, the city of Tucson will be turned into a virtual taco-topia with over 30 amateur and professional competitors battling for $5,000 cash and bragging rights over the title “Grand Champion Taco” at the first Tucson Taco Festival at Rillito Downs. Produced by Affordable Food Festivals, LLC, this event will be modeled after the Arizona Taco Festival in Scottsdale, which attracts upwards of 15,000 people. However, organizers expect the Tucson Taco Festival to be differentiated by Sonoran-tinged recipes and competitors who bring their deepest border-town flavors to the heated contest.

Taco teams compete in chicken, pork, beef, and seafood tacos, submitting to over 40 National Taco Association judges, who are sequestered in a closed tent for truly anonymous judging.

Every team will sell $2 tacos to the public all day, as well as salsa, guacamole, and anything-goes tacos as they choose. Organizers expect over 25,000 tacos will be sold on the day! Meanwhile, a full festival entertains attendees.

Inside the Tequila Expo, over 30 brands will pour samples of over 100 tequilas. At noon, 10 local bartenders will set up inside this tent and begin the Margarita Challenge Mix-Off, with three celebrity judges ready to crown Best Marg. Also happening throughout the day—live Lucha Libre wrestling, cooking demonstrations by top chefs, live bands, hilarious food contests on the main stage, and bouncing around in the Kid’s Zone.
Those looking for respite from the crowds can purchase a $100 ticket into the VIP Tent, where open bar and catered food inside the tent await. VIPs also enjoy a separate lineless entrance and wristbands into the Tequila Expo.

A list of initial taco teams will be released in early March. The Tucson Taco Festival takes place on April 28, 2012, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., at Rillito Downs (4502 N. 1st Ave., Tucson, AZ 85718). General Admission is $10 (kids under 12 are free), Tequila Expo is $10, VIP Ticket costs $100. Samples of competition tacos are $2 each. Tickets are available online .
