Tucson Festival of Books: What’s Under the Culinary Tent?

The Tucson Festival of Books happens next weekend (March 11 & 12) and for foodies and cooks, there is plenty to mentally munch on.

Chef Ryan Clark, Executive Chef at Casino del Sol and Festival of Books Culinary Tent advisor, is pleased to announce the outstanding lineup of Tucson chefs/food authorities who will participate as moderators and assistant chefs in the Tucson Festival of Books Culinary program.

Chef Clark, along with Jennifer Slothower and Mary Barker (culinary tent co-chairs) worked to pair local talent with visiting cookbook authors appearing at the 2017 Festival of Books.

Saturday, March 11:

 10am ~ Julia Turshen whose book “Small Victories” has appeal for beginning cooks as well as professionals, kicks off the weekend.  Chef Devon Sanner from the Carriage House will perform assistant chef duties, while Chef Clark will moderate.

11:30am~ Chef John Ash, will feature his book “Cooking Wild: More than 150 Recipes for Eating Close to Nature.”  Chef Mario Diaz de Sandy, from Pima College Culinary Program will assist, while Chef Donna Nordin of Terra Cotta fame moderates.                          

1pm ~ Award- winning culinary blogger Molly Yeh’s first book, “Molly on the Range” will be featured with Chef Judith Baigent King of Culinary Concepts assisting, and Megan Kimble, editor of Edible Baja Arizona, as moderator.

2:30pm ~ Chinese culinary authority Carolyn Phillips showcases recipes from her book, “All Under Heaven,” a handbook to Chinese cuisine, assisted by Chef Jim Murphy from Kingfisher Bar & Grill.  Moderator will be Jennifer Slothower, culinary tent co-chair.

4:00pm ~ Featuring James Beard award winner Naomi Pomeroy’s new book “Taste and Technique” Recipes to Elevate your Home Cooking, Chef Donna Nordin will assist, while Tucson Foodie publisher Adam Lehrman moderates.

Sunday, March 12:

10am ~ Managing Editor of Arizona Highways Magazine, Kelly Vaughn’s book “Arizona’s Best Recipes” features iconic recipes from some of Arizona’s best chefs. Chef Brian Smith from Maynards will assist and Jennifer Slothower will moderate.

11:30am ~ Victor Hazan’s “Ingredienti: An Italian Guide to the Market” is a comprehensive guide to shopping for ingredients used in his late wife Marcella Hazan’s recipes.   Chef Ernesto Andrade from Canyon Ranch will assist.  Matt Russell, host of “On the Menu Live” will moderate.

1pm~ Julia Turshen returns with more recipes from her book “Small Victories.”  She will be assisted by Chef Travis Peters of The Parish and the session will be moderated by Noel Patterson, local honey producer, sommelier and food authority.

2:30pm ~ Chef Naomi Pomeroy returns with additional recipes from “Taste and Technique.”  Chef Clark will assist and Jennifer Slothower will moderate.

Admission to the Festival of Books Culinary Tent is free, seating is limited to 266 guests.  More information.
